Video Bandwidth Protector
Stanford and other researchers are creating neuromorphic chips that can mimic the cortex, the hippocampus, and the retina. The objective is to better comprehend the brain and, eventually, design neural prosthetics, such as an artificial retina. Silicon Brains
Europe’s new Jules Verne cargo ship has been cleared for its first docking with the International Space Station’s Russian-built Zvezda service module on Thursday.
(New York Times)The Jules Verne is the first of a new class of robot station supply ships called Automatic Transfer Vehicles or ATV’s. It can carry 10 tons of cargo. The ship is to maneuver and dock itself automatically using GPS satellite navigation, and a new optical guidance system for close approach to the station. A twin laser system is to fire pulses of light at reflectors positioned on the end of Zvezda to determine the craft’s orientation, distance and closing rate to the space station. Bill Myers wrote to tell me about his Video Bandwidth Protector for Amazon S3. As Bill says:
I developed this program to make it easy to store and display videos and Camtasia movies at Amazon S3 storage, while at the same time, making it very difficult for others to steal bandwidth via unauthorizeddisplay of those videos.
Basically, this system encapsulates a video file so that it can only be played when hosted within a web page served up by a particular domain. The script uses "security via obscurity" to protect the underlying URL from prying eyes.
Bill has put together a nice tutorial video for the protector.
The system is now available free of charge, but you are certainly welcome to leave a donation to support this project.
Very cool!

A few days ago blog ad network Chitika released a study [PDF] co-sponsored by University of Texas, Dallas that projects revenue for the top 50,000 weblogs at $500 million.
Various bloggers have been quite skeptical of this figure and their research methodology, including TechCrunch, Just Make Money Online, and various other blogs, though the main response seems to have been simply ignoring the data.
But if you do the math, it really does make sense and the numbers are not only reasonable, but perhaps just a bit low.
$500 million revenue across 50,000 blogs is probably low.
